Walk as fast as our legs c<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">ould<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> carry u<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">s<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">, head straight to the shop, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">market, posho mill, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">butchery or <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">p<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">etrol <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">s<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">tation, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">purchase the supplies <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">we<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> need<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">ed<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> and head home immediately, walking as fast as our legs c<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">ould<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> carry u<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">s<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">. That was the definition of a good errand runner. Those of us who lingered <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">a<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> few minutes longer were removed from the list of errand runners, meaning we never got to visit town, ever. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">We could not allow that to happen because that was our only outing, other than church which was nowhere near town. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">With that threat hanging front and center in our minds, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">imagine <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">horror of reaching town <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">one day<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">only to find closed shops and Chief Apollo directing every moving soul to<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">wards<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> AC Primary School grounds. There was no escapin<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">g<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> and there was no returning home without the needed supplies that took you to town in the first place. We were taught to follow directions from adults in authority, therefore, we could not defy Chief Apollo. We <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">obliged the Chief\u2019s order but we <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">were the kids at such meetings who sat at a corner and hang our heads in frustration. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Thank goodness there were no television crews covering such events otherwise we would have appeared on television looking like we were waiting for our execution. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Of course we were met with hostility when we r<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">eturne<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">d home, but our reason was valid this time, so we were forgiven, but reminded it was our responsibility to keep up with such calendar events in future to avoid a repeat of what just happened, wasting precious time in town, a place we did not belong. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">You would be forgiven to think we did not belong in the same country with our mother observing the same National holidays.\u00a0 How come she did not know it was a National Day and shops would be closed, yet she expected us to have that information?\u00a0 We had such questions swirling through our heads but who would dare ask her that?\u00a0 Maybe Chief Apollo, then they could duke it out.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For us who visited town only once in a while, sent by our very strict parents, our mission was clear.
