{"id":1096,"date":"2019-05-19T03:19:23","date_gmt":"2019-05-19T03:19:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nyandarua.com\/home\/?p=1096"},"modified":"2019-08-03T22:12:24","modified_gmt":"2019-08-03T22:12:24","slug":"power-of-a-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nyandarua.com\/home\/power-of-a-chief\/","title":{"rendered":"Power of A Chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block pg-opt box-content\">\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">We <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">got to <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> kn<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">o<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">w the power of the Chief\u2019s office during National Days. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">First, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">every business in town was supposed to hang the Kenyan flag at the front of their buildings. There was a penalty for any business that failed to comply. <\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">They were also supposed to have the portrait of the President hanging prominently inside their places of business, otherwise there was a penalty for non compliance. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Back then, the entire town came to a standstill, whether <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">the<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> citizens were interested <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">in the celebrations <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">or not. A day like Madaraka Day, Kenyatta Day and Jamuhuri Day, the entire town <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">was expected to <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">gather at the grounds of AC Primary <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">School<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> to <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">hear <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> the Presidents\u2019 speech read to them by the local District Officer, simply known to the locals as DO. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The speeches were long and boring, majority of people were not interested to hear them. It was the same old political stuff they had heard over the years, with no <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">tangible<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> changes happening in their towns. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The government knew this and they devised a plan to force everybody to go to the \u201cstadium\u201d, otherwise there would be nobody there. When the DO\u2019s LandRover made its way through OlKalou town heading to AC Primary grounds, every shop in town was supposed to close its doors and the owners, their families and the customers were supposed to follow the DO to AC Primary. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Chief Apollo, his Administration Police and the local police went all over OlKalou <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">wielding their batons<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">, rallying everybody to head towards AC. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The shops <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">di<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">d not reopen <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">until the speech was read in full and the DO made his off the cuff remarks. At that point Chief Apollos\u2019 job was done and the town could resume its normal activities. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">We hated those days and we avoided town at all cost until they were done and the businesses reopened.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We got to know the power of the Chief\u2019s office during National Days.
