{"id":1121,"date":"2019-05-19T14:31:19","date_gmt":"2019-05-19T14:31:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nyandarua.com\/home\/?p=1121"},"modified":"2019-08-01T20:42:04","modified_gmt":"2019-08-01T20:42:04","slug":"gachogu-matatu-guy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nyandarua.com\/home\/gachogu-matatu-guy\/","title":{"rendered":"Gachogu: The Matatu Guy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block pg-opt box-content\">\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I was not surprised when Mr. Gachogu left teaching and bought a matatu, which he drove himself. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">He<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> fitted so well with the touts (Makanga) and fellow drivers, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">you would not think he was once a teacher let alon<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">e<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> a headmaster. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">For us, his former students, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">whom he always remembered by name many years <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">after <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">leaving Munyeki, we were always amused to <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">find <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">him<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> exchanging banter with famous OlKalou bus stop Touts of our day Kanyua and Ngiva. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">We were lucky to have had<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> Mr. Gachogu start <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">us<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> o<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">ff<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">on <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">our education journey. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Mr. Gachogu also owned a well stocked clothes shop in OlKalou town which was ran by his <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">wife <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Ng\u2019endo. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Everybody knew her as <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Nyina wa Njeri. She was a true sales person who never met a stranger.\u00a0 It did not matter if you were entering her shop to purchase something or just passing by, heading to other shops ahead. Whenever she was not serving customers inside the shop, she was always seated on the bench out on the veranda, chatting with passers by and other shopkeepers from the next shops.\u00a0 She also spent a lot of time chatting with Mr. Ng&#8217;atho, the tailor who ran his clothes business from outside her shop &#8211; more about Mr. Ng&#8217;atho next.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Nyina wa Njeri did not only have a sunny personality, she was also very pretty.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">She had very pronounced <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">dimples on both cheeks.\u00a0 You could not miss the dimples because she was always <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">jovial, her laughter could be heard five shops away. She was also a very fast talker, a quality that served her well in the sales job she was doing.\u00a0 She was a perfect match for the easygoing, never met a stranger, Mr. Gachogu.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Their shop was on the fancy side of town. &#8220;Kwa Uhindi&#8221; They were the first t<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">o<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> br<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">ing<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> fashionable styles of clothes from Nairobi <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">and elsewhere<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">It was our very own OlKalou Mall.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was not surprised when Mr. Gachogu left teaching and bought a matatu, which he drove himself.
