{"id":2492,"date":"2019-05-15T07:05:37","date_gmt":"2019-05-15T07:05:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nyandarua.com\/home\/?p=2492"},"modified":"2020-04-26T21:08:29","modified_gmt":"2020-04-26T21:08:29","slug":"father","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nyandarua.com\/home\/father\/","title":{"rendered":"Pioneer Father"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>I emerged from the dense forests of Mount Kenya,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>my hideout while fighting the British colonists.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>It was the sunset of the year 1963 when the Union Jack lowered and<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>our flag was raised displaying its beautiful stripes of<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Red, White, Green and Black<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>symbolizing Blood, Peace, Pasture and Motherland.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>It was a magical moment to savor but also to ponder.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>When the song and dance celebrating independence had died down,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>it was the dawn of 1964, my year of reckoning.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I looked around my fathers compound and the strip of land<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>on which it stood.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I looked at my brothers despondent faces, and my uncles too.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I looked at my beautiful, youthful, energetic wife and our five young children,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I was their only hope for a better future<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>I headed North to the \u201cwhite highlands\u201d,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the new Settlement Schemes vacated by the British colonists.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The highlands were freezing cold,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>my entire body ached and my joints felt stiff as a board,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>but the lush fertile land with gently rolling hills lured me in.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I needed to put down roots somewhere,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>and my young family needed a place to call home<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>We packed up whatever little we could carry and headed North,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>leaving everything and everybody else behind<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>relocating my young family to this strange land up North.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>We hastily put up shelter and fenced off our new land,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>while shivering in the cold, as we broke ground on this virgin land.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>We introduced ourselves to our new neighbors,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>noticing their Kikuyu accent was different from our own, but,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>they were now the only \u201cfamily\u201d we could count on.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Over the years, their daughter married into my family<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>and gave me beautiful grandchildren with names like Watetu and Wahito,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I don&#8217;t notice their accent anymore, now we are one and the same<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>I watched my children take their place in society,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>speaking the language of the colonial masters with ease,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>their careers taking them to places I could never have imagined.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>They brought spouses from all over the country,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>extending our family name to national status and beyond.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I now cheer my children on, as they guide their own children<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>to take their place in this society we have build together from scratch.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>With hunched shoulders, a bald head, wrinkled face, dimming eyesight<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>and walking gingerly with my well worn cane,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I can finally sit back and enjoy the sunset without a care in the world.\u00a0 Why?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Because I ran when life demanded I run,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I fought fearlessly when my country desperately needed to drive out the ruthless colonists,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I served when society required my services and<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I was a parent when my children needed raising<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>I am proud of the Nyandarua I see today,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>compared to the Nyandarua I stepped into in the 1960s.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I am proud of the strong communities we have built together,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>disregarding the Gikuyus we originated from.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>It was not easy, but we soldiered on without ever looking backwards.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>My neighbors and I had roots in Gikuyu, but our children and grandchildren have their very deep roots <\/strong><strong>planted in Nyandarua just as we had hoped for them.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Nyandarua has its legitimate owners now, and they seem proud to call it HOME<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>A parent always hopes their children will have a better life than theirs was.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I raised Teachers, Farmers, Engineers, Businessmen, Auto Mechanics, <\/strong><strong>Accountants, Corporate Managers and some proud Housewives.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>My children are now providing labor force in every sector of our economy,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>and I am proud of each one of them and their contribution to society.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I know I am a huge success not because of anything I own but<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>because of the well adjusted human beings I raised, who are now standing tall <\/strong><strong>in their respective fields and making a difference in society today and looking <\/strong><strong>into the future with <\/strong><strong>confidence. <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>My heart swells with pride and gratitude just thinking about them all.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>This Pioneer Parent\u2019s time is up and I rest peacefully<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>knowing that the bold but scary decision I made back in the 1960s, to relocate <\/strong><strong>my family to the freezing highlands of Nyandarua was not in vain<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>My children and future generations who bear my name or DNA will forever <\/strong><strong>have a home here in Nyandarua.
