When we were growing up, there were careers and jobs we thought were beneath us. Nobody told us they were, but it was our perception and that of the society we grew up in. We held such perceptions because there were many other career and job opportunities available to us. Unfortunately, some of those misguided mind sets are still promoted by society today and our children, the next generation has embraced those deeply held perceptions without looking at the reality around them in the society they are growing up in today.
The world is rapidly changing around us and we need to change our mindset for us to survive, otherwise we will be left decades behind, failing our children in the process and the society at large. Our parents did whatever they needed to do during the 1970s and 80s when we were growing up, responding to the needs of their world back then. They “read the tea leaves” and prepared us for that world. It worked.
Our children are not growing up in the 1970s and 80s, and it would be a huge mistake to prepare them with the tools and ideas from those past decades. Some of the past ideas may work but most will not.
That is why we need to get real and face our current situation head on. We are living in different times and we should act and respond differently to the issues of the times we are living in.
